Sat, Sep. 3rd, 2005, 11:35 pm [katrina] update on programmers wanted

OK, I don't have one significant programming project. I may have three or more. 1) Consolidated searches of missing/OK registries. 2) Host Family Registry. 3) Volunteers *Wanted* Registry.

Cool beans. Questions to have him answer when he writes me: 1) Which db? I'm using postresql here. 2) Do db backed web dev? php? pl?

I have the impression that you really need people with more computer power and savvy than me (dial up modem, 1999 machine), but I do have plenty of time at the moment (just got laid off), so if you can use someone of more limited internet ability, I'd be more than happy to help. I don't know squat about Html, but I can type stuff in excel for you. I'm not quite clear on whether I have enough idea of what I am doing to actually help you rather than slow things down, depending on who has already got back to you. But if you can use me for any of the above, just let me know. I could definitely do a regular shift at whatever you need.

Thanks. That first post was actually what I was looking at this morning. But this is where I start feeling stupid. I can start typing your list into excel, but then what do I do with it? (email it to you, presumably?) As far as looking on-line, how do I know what somone else has already done so that I'm doing something actually useful and not repeating what anyone else has already done and sent to you?

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to go to each of the sites on that list and figure out what the contact email address is for the person in charge of it. Leave off anything big and famous like cnn.com or redcross.org -- unless you think you could manage it for them :) Please comment on the post if you're accepting this mission, saying so. Then everyone will know it's being done! Either Excel or a plaintext list would be fine; then you email it to me. That would be a great help!

Definitely need consolidated search. These registries are popping up all over the place and I haven't yet found a meta-site with search.

I'm not a programmer, I'm a designer. I've mirrored the Resources site on my server. You list a lot of projects - what do you need help with first?

1) Do you do a) HTML production, or b) graphical design? If a) I'll send you a spec in a couple hours. If b) Can I have a logo icon? The name of the project is "the Underwater Railroad". We need an icon!

A & B - both. Give me specs and what you want for the logo imagery, size, animation, etc. I can do those tonight.

1) Bandwidth is sacred; waste not, want not. 2) Imagery: The little dipper constellation, outlined as "The Drinking Gourd" (the name the slaves used for that constellation.) Open to counter-proposals. If you could give me a couple of sizes, including a 40x40 (tiny), a 70x70 (lj icon), and a standard banner as for horizontal ads, that would be way groovy. I'll be right with you on that HTML spec. I'll tell you now, it would make me way happy if it were in fiercely compliant XHTML.

Mon, Sep. 5th, 2005 10:28 pm (UTC) (Anonymous): Going further with centralizing searches
I used to work for a SEO company and they had me write spiders/bots from scratch. Perhaps I can apply that knowledge to centralizing these missing people search sites by scrubbing the pages. Of course thats if they dont have xml feeds available.
Just a thought.
